Athletics, a Highland Games tradition
Athletics events have long been part of the Highland Games’ tradition and are a well established feature of the Games here in Nethy Bridge. Long ago, clansmen were tested in hill races in order to choose a messenger who was fit and fast. There are echoes of this in our RSPB sponsored 10-mile road race through the Abernethy Forest, which became a feature of the Games from 1969.
Other tests of strength and speed have evolved over time. Cycle racing was once a feature and, in the 1970s, the Games were the venue of the AAA Northern District Triple Jump Championship, when one Fred McEvilly was the winner for seven successive years. There are sprints and middle-distance events for all ages together with the challenge of the high-jump.
